Saunas Frequently Asked Questions
Isn't a sauna just a hot bath?
Far from it! A sauna is an insulated room constructed from soft wood with a heater capable of bringing the temperature to approximately 180°F. The heat causes special stones to produce steam when water is drizzled over them. Even though steam is produced, it is not a steam bath. The humidity is relatively dry and comfortable, creating a relaxing atmosphere that promotes many health benefits.
Why do saunas have rocks?
Rocks efficiently store heat and provide an excellent surface for the release of steam when water is applied. The Cal Spas® design ensures an even distribution of heat and steam for a more comfortable and effective sauna experience.
Why are saunas made of wood?
A soft wood, like Cal Spas Aspen, is chosen for its ability to absorb humidity. This keeps the atmosphere in the sauna comfortably dry, while keeping wood surfaces cool to the touch.
Where can a sauna be installed?
Cal Heat® offers saunas in a variety of shapes and sizes for both indoor and outdoor application. Consequently, Cal Heat saunas can be placed just about anywhere you have space. Master bathrooms, retreats, bonus rooms, garages, patios, decks and basements are all ideal places to install a sauna. All you need is a waterproof floor and a 220/240V electrical hookup for the heater. It is also a good idea to have a shower nearby for rinsing off during and after your sauna session. Not all saunas are intended for outdoor use. Cal Spas recommends only the Cal Heat Extreme Outdoor™ Series Saunas for outdoor use.
Does it cost a lot to operate a sauna?
Because Cal Heat Saunas reach operating temperatures quickly and retain heat more efficiently, energy consumption is relatively low. Electrical costs are often less than $10/month when used one (1) to two (2) hours a day, three (3) times a week.
How long will it take to have my sauna setup and running?
Depending on the model you choose, set up time usually takes less than a few hours. Within a single day, you'll be relaxing and enjoying the health benefits of your Cal Heat Sauna.
